Pottery Classes Newton Abbot

Pottery Classes, Creative Workshops and Art Gallery

Who We Are

Hi I’m Pam, owner and ceramic artist, based here in lovely, Newton Abbot, Devon!

With a first class (hons) degree in Art & Design, specialising in Graphics and Illustration, I have been running my own design business for 14 years and have been creating in clay for over 6 years.

I love using typographical elements in clay, combining textures and exploring glazes. Some of my work is on display for you to see and buy. You're welcome to call in to see what I do!

I love helping others discover and explore their creative side and share the delights of working with clay.

What We Do

At the Mint Creative Studio we run 'Have a Go' Pottery sessions, art workshops hosted by local, practicing artists, showcase original and handcrafted artwork at our lovely studio in Devon Square, Newton Abbot, Devon.

The artists currently delivering creative and art workshops here at The Mint Creative Studio in Newton Abbot are:

• Nina Knaggs from Devon Paper Flowers (Handcrafted Paper Flowers)

Some sessions are in high demand with a waiting list so when you book a place, you may be preventing someone else attending. If you cancel on the day of the booking or don’t attend you also disappoint the artist who has put their time and effort into creating and hosting the workshop.

All artworks we sell are totally original, handcrafted one off creations by local and national artists that you can't buy on the highstreet, so when you're purchasing from us you're supporting our artists so they can continue doing what they love and we continue to provide this lovely, creative space for you!

Many Thanks

Hey Clay

Hey Clay is an annual Crafts Council inititative, giving members of the community the chance to have a go at ceramics for the first time or re-discover a former passion.

Craft promotes well-being, self-esteem and a connection to others through community and leads to diverse careers and creative satisfaction throughout life. However craft education is on the decline with 26% less students taking craft-related GCSE’s over the last 10 years. We cannot reverse these worrying statistics alone and it’s why our involvement in Hey Clay is important.

Hey Clay! is part of the Get Creative campaign to encourage everyday creativity led by the BBC, the Crafts Council and a number of other creative organisations.

We are very excited to announce Mint Creative Studio will be hosting our first Hey Clay! Event from Friday 23rd - Saturday 24th March.
Between the hours of 10am and 4pm, our studio is open for you to drop in and create for free. Maybe you’ve always wanted to have a go on the Potter’s Wheel or return to making in clay, our friendly potters will be there to guide you in the processes. If demand is high we will facilitate a booking service on the day.

The open sessions are free but there will be a charge for glazing & firing your creations after the event!

We look forward to seeing you at our first Hey Clay! Event.

What Others Say

Press Release August 2017

Mint Creative Studio is a friendly new pottery studio in Devon Square, owned by ceramic artist Pam Neaves.
Pam has a first-class degree in art and design, specialising in graphics and illustration. She’s been running her own design business for 14 years and creating in clay for more than five years. And now she’s brought her skills to Newton Abbot town centre.

As well as Pam’s work on display and to buy she runs ‘have a go’ pottery sessions three evenings a week; ‘have a go’ oil painting classes with local artist Ewan Walton; and ‘creative indulgence’ events for special occasions, combining a bit of pottery with cream, savoury or high tea at the vintage tea room Indulgence next door. She also has gallery space for local artists to display their talents.
Her pottery sessions have been incredibly successful and spaces have filled up quickly.

Pam said: ‘I love helping others discover and explore their creative side and share the delights of working with clay.
‘Whether you’re an experienced artist who wants to use our clay, wheels and kiln or you’ve always wanted to give it a go…you’re welcome to join us!’

This summer has seen three new businesses open in Newton Abbot town centre and I was delighted that the Mayor of Newton Abbot Cllr Mrs Ann Jones was able to spend some time visiting each of them.

Brilliant place to learn a new skill!
I recently visited the studio a number of times. It is a great place to pop in and chat to the owner and view some of the amazing items lining the walls. What we claying at?
9th February 2018

The people who attend our pottery sessions for the first time, often ask me what the difference between the clays and it was something I was unaware of when I first started creating in clay

The clay we tend to use on the pottery sessions here at the studio in Newton Abbot is stoneware clay, most potters or ceramic artists usually have a preference for a certain type of clay. We use Stoneware clay mainly because that’s my favourite but sometimes, where in our pottery workshops we may use earthenware clay.

Here’s what the difference is: Whether a clay is classed as Earthenware or Stoneware depends on how porous the clay body is after it’s final firing.

Earthenware clay is fired at a lower temperature in the kiln (max 1180ºC) at this temperature the clay is still porous (allowing water in) and would require a glaze coating and further firing to make it waterproof. It is the most common clay found in nature, is used to make tiles bricks as well as pottery and doesn’t shrink much when it dries.

Stoneware clay is fired at a much higher temperature (max 1300ºC) and is named because it looks like stone after firing. It should also be completely leak proof after its final firing. It is tough and workable, it’s often favoured by pot throwers for its plasticity but is also good for hand building, creating pinch-pots and coiling.
Although it shrinks up to 10%.
After it’s final firing in the kiln, stoneware clay will be buff, light grey, brown or dark grey in colour. This clay is great for creating vases, jugs, cups, teapots, dishes, plates as well as more sculptural forms.
Another benefit of using stoneware clay is the bright and richly coloured glazes that can be achieved from the higher firing temperatures.

I’ve worked with both types of clay and love the flexibility and durability of Stoneware, which is perfect for creating pieces of ceramic artwork for the garden.
Whilst it’s not advisable to mix both earthenware and stoneware clay and some traditional potters may frown upon the suggestion but if you want to experiment with surfaces and are prepared for unexpected outcomes then I would say give it a go!
